چکیده

We report two experiments investigating rotating sounds presented on a circular array of 12 speakers. Velocity thresholds were measured for three different types of stimuli (broadband noises, white noise, harmonic sounds). In the first experiment, we gradually increased or decreased the velocity and asked participants to indicate the point at which they stopped or started (respectively) perceiving a rotating sound. The thresholds ranged between 1.95-2.80 rot/s for noises and 1.65-2.75 rot/s for harmonic sounds. We observed significant effects of the direction of velocity change (acceleration or deceleration), stimulus type and fundamental frequencies for harmonic sounds, but no effect of centre frequency was observed for broadband noises. In the second experiment, stimuli were presented at constant velocities in a single-interval forcedchoice paradigm: listeners were asked to indicate if the sound was rotating or not. The thresholds obtained were within the range of those of the first experiment. The effect of frequency for harmonic sounds was confirmed.

Modulation frequency as a cue for auditory speed perception.

Unlike vision, the mechanisms underlying auditory motion perception are poorly understood. Here we describe an auditory motion illusion revealing a novel cue to auditory speed perception: the temporal frequency of amplitude modulation (AM-frequency), typical for rattling sounds. Naturally, corrugated objects sliding across each other generate rattling sounds whose AM-frequency tends to directly...

Concurrent auditory perception difficulties in older adults with right hemisphere cerebrovascular accident

Background :Older adults with cerebrovascular accident (CVA) show evidence of auditory and speech perception problems. In present study, it was examined whether these problems are due to impairments of concurrent auditory segregation procedure which is the basic level of auditory scene analysis and auditory organization in auditory scenes with competing sounds.   Methods : Concurrent auditory...

Auditory agnosia and auditory spatial deficits following left hemispheric lesions: evidence for distinct processing pathways.

Auditory recognition and auditory spatial functions were studied in four patients with circumscribed left hemispheric lesions. Patient FD was severely deficient in recognition of environmental sounds but normal in auditory localisation and auditory motion perception. The lesion included the left superior, middle and inferior temporal gyri and lateral auditory areas (as identified in previous an...

The effects of linearly moving sound images on self-motion perception

1. Introduction To develop new man-machine interfaces and new communication systems, clarification of human multi-modal information processing has become a crucial, challenging and interesting topic. Self-motion perception is well known as a multi-modal information process influenced by visual, postural, and somatic information. However, we do not always use all of these kinds of information to...

Adaptive sex differences in auditory motion perception: looming sounds are special.

In 4 experiments, the authors examined sex differences in audiospatial perception of sounds that moved toward and away from the listener. Experiment 1 showed that both men and women underestimated the time-to-arrival of full-cue looming sounds. However, this perceptual bias was significantly stronger among women than among men. In Experiment 2, listeners estimated the terminal distance of sound...
